Composition and Chemistry

Active Components

Positive Electrode:
Active material = Nickel oxyhydroxide (NiOOH)

Negative Electrode:
Active material = Metal hydride

Duracell Ni-MH technology uses AB5 alloy composition (e.g. LaNi5).

AB5 composition offers better corrosion resistance for longer cycle life and better recharging following storage.

Electrolyte
Aqueous potassium hydroxide solution is the primary electrolyte. Minimal electrolyte is used to facilitate oxygen diffusion to the negative electrode.

Cell Reactions
During Discharge:
NiOOH + H20 + e-Ni(OH)2 + OH-
and
MH + OH-M + H2O + e-

Overall Reaction:
MH + NiOOHM + Ni(OH)2

The process is reversed during charge.
